My version of the document changes included with 2.2.17 from kernel.org
indicates that it should be compiled with gcc.  My original source for the use
of kgcc was a reply from Bugzilla.
The documentation does conclude that egcs has not been thoroughly tested.  ( I
strongly assume that you have been testing on your own kernels).
Can I compile the kernel using egcs by changing the lines in the Makefile
from
CC    =$(CROSS_COMPILE)cc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)
to
CC    =$(CROSS_COMPILE)egcs -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)
