Yo,

One other thing I could add: simplicity. That's both implementation,
theory and operation. Cipe is one small chunk of code with not too many
serious bugs in it's history. PPP and SSH is all but simple and thus
(like history has proven) will contain more flaws. For security (and
system operations / maintenance in general) I personally do always
prefer the simple and small to the complex and large. Hell, it even
save's on hardware.
