Subject: Problem with cipe using small mtu's
From: Evan Harris <eharris,AT,puremagic,DOT,com>

I just in the last day or so tried to setup a cipe tunnel from a machine on
a network that has several machines sitting behind a ppp connection. To
allow for better sharing of the ppp connection, it is setup with a small MTU
of 296, which minus the IP header, gives cipe a 256byte payload.

After I establish the tunnel, the kernel on the tunnel server starts
printing these messages to syslog, and no traffic seems to pass:

Feb 6 19:20:52 tserv ciped-cb[14580]: kxchg: recv: Message too long
Feb 6 19:20:52 tserv kernel: cipcb0: cipe_recvmsg
Feb 6 19:20:59 tserv ciped-cb[14580]: kxchg: recv: Message too long
Feb 6 19:20:59 tserv kernel: cipcb0: cipe_recvmsg
Feb 6 19:21:11 tserv ciped-cb[14580]: kxchg: recv: Message too long
Feb 6 19:21:11 tserv kernel: cipcb0: cipe_recvmsg
Feb 6 19:21:37 tserv ciped-cb[14580]: kxchg: recv: Message too long
Feb 6 19:21:37 tserv kernel: cipcb0: cipe_recvmsg

What is the minimum end-to-end MTU required for cipe, and how can I fix this
problem without increasing the ppp mtu?

Evan
